STUDENT VISA - SUBCLASS 500

Study in Australia

Under a Student Visa, you can study short and long term courses in Australia, allowing you to gain an internationally recognised Australian qualification.

You must choose to study in an institution that is registered on CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students). The educational institutions must comply with having the courses registered on CRICOS; this registration is managed by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment.

Live in Australia

Depending on the length of your visa, you can live in Australia for a short or long period. In addition, you can enter and leave Australia as many times as you like throughout the duration of your course.

Work in Australia

The Student Visa allows you to work 40 hours fortnightly (two weeks) during your studies.

If you are studying at a Masters by Research or PhD, you would usually be allowed to work unlimited hours during the course study length if the work is part of your course.

You must always check the information on the Department of Home Affairs website as it can be updated without notice.

Bring your family to Australia

You can include your family members when applying for a Student Visa.

A family member is:

spouse or de facto partner
your or your partner's dependent child who is unmarried and has not turned 18 years of age.

Your spouse or de facto partner may have similar work rights.

Renew or extend your stay in Australia

There is no specific limit on how many courses you can study in Australia. However, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) may be weakened if you apply for multiple extensions for your Student Visa.

OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVER (OSHC)

Student Visa

OSHC

When applying for a Student Visa, you must hold an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

You are required to provide evidence of adequate arrangements for health insurance while in Australia.

The Department of Home Affairs might ask you to provide a copy of a current private health insurance policy held with an Australian registered private health insurer for you and any additional applicants applying for the visa with you.
